CALL FOR PAPERS
Ethnicity, Nationalism, and National Identity Network 2016 Conference:
Plurality, Belonging, and the Nation State
19th-20th May 2016
Debates within and without academia point towards the overlapping and
multiple nature of identity. Dual citizenship, diaspora groupings, continued
debates on ‘multiculturalism’, changing understandings of citizenship, and

University of Edinburgh’s Ethnicity, Nationalism and National Identity
Network (ENNIN) invites papers related to the contested and complex
interplay between identities and nation states.
ENNIN welcomes proposals from postgraduate and early-career
researchers on the following topics:
- The role of the state in mediating multiple identities.
- ‘Multiculturalism’ and Pluralism within nation states.
- Hybridity and intersectionality in relation to national identity.
- Diaspora and national identity.
- Irredentist Nationalism.
The conference aims to explore the complex relationships between
multiple and overlapping identities and foster interdisciplinary research on
the above. Interdisciplinary work focusing on how multiple identities (such
as gender and ethnicity) interact with national identity, the changing role of
the state in mediating national identities, and instances where selfprofessed
identity does not neatly match citizenship are particularly

minutes, followed by discussion. On the 20th attendees are invited to
present a poster of their research.
